Natural Non Toxic Skin Care + Make Up

Natural Non Toxic Skin Care + Make Up

I've always been into healthy foods and exercise, and to me, they have always been the two most obvious things to focus on if you expect to stay healthy for life.

But when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, what you put ON your body is just as important as what you put IN it. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and it absorbs whatever you put on it. Studies have shown that our skin absorbs up to 60% of what we slather onto it, and the sensitive areas around face and armpits can absorb up to 100%. Scary facts!

Why using non-toxic skin care?

The majority of mainstream body care products contain a cocktail of carcinogenic chemicals, allergens, and irritants. And while researching this, what truly hit my interest was the fact that many of these substances can also disrupt your endocrine system. Read more about the "Dirty Dozen" (aka the 12 most common toxic ingredients to avoid) in skin care products here.

It is easy to see that what we use on our skin ends up inside our bodies. So it is just as important to pay close attention to the ingredients in our skin care products as being careful with what we eat.

The more I read on the subject, I realized that I had to do something immediately - for me, my PMS and heavy periods (hormonal balance) but also for my family and growing kids. I immediately started transitioning to natural products, and in a few weeks I had thrown all the toxic products out and replaced them with natural and non-toxic products. And as I said, this goes for my entire family. The skin and hair care that we use on a daily basis is now natural.

I have to add though that I still use a few products that are not natural, and I still color my hair and such. But as with food, even if we strive to eat organic and healthily most of the time, it isn't relevant to think that we can do it 100% every day. However, to me, the 80/20 rule works well with everything from healthy eating vs candy, exercise vs being "lazy" to natural body care vs not-so-natural treatments.

Below is my list of the products I've found that works best and that I love the most right now. Please note that I haven't been paid by any of the brands or web shops mentioned/linked in this post. They just happen to be some of my personal favorites at the moment, and I'm more than happy to share them with you.

Body + general hygiene

Body Wash: I've tried a few since I started my transition to natural products, and all of them are great, but as it turns out, I am probably a little sensitive to essential oils (which is almost always used for fragrance in natural products), thus some of them feel too strong on my skin. The one I found that works best for me is Weleda Lavender Creamy Body Wash - it smells wonderful and works up a smooth foam that feels super mild and fresh.

Body Moisturizer: Maria Åkerberg Body Lotion Bergamot/Sandalwood. It has a very mild scent that doesn't compete with my perfume (if using) and it keeps my skin soft and hydrated better than other body moisturizers I've tried so far.

Body oil: Maria Åkerberg Royal Body Oil. In the winter and after exposure to sun/wind/salt in the summer, my skin is drier and then I just LOVE using this oil. I also use coconut oil every now and then when my skin feels dry.

Deodorant: This is a tough one. A few years ago I made a half-hearted attempt to switch to natural, aluminium free deodorant when I learned how harmful aluminium chloride is to our bodies. But I never found one that worked well and panicked over walking around not smelling good, thus immediately went back to using my old deodorant. Now, a few years later, the range of natural beauty products is much better and it didn't take long til I found a favorite natural deodorant too! My two favorites are True Organics of Sweden and Agent Nature - both are amazing, and do their job perfectly even for sweaty workouts and power walks!

Perfume: Le Labo makes 100% natural perfume (most other brands use synthetic fragrance) and my favorite is Rose 31.

Hand Soap: L:A Bruket. We have a dog, and I work from home = we use a lot of hand soap! I love all of L:A Bruket's soaps, and we've used them for ages. My current favorites are Geranium and Sage/Rosemary/Lavender.

Tooth Paste: Kingfisher. My favorite is Baking Soda, but Fennel and Mint are wonderful too if I feel like a change.

Dog Shampoo: L:A Bruket. Our dog Leia doesn't take baths very often, as a dog is only supposed to be washed with shampoo every 3-5 weeks (or when very dirty) due to their sensitive skin. But when she does, she does it non-toxic and in style with L:A Bruket ;-)

Moisturizer: Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer. I was a little skeptic at first when it came to natural anti-wrinkle cream. Not that I'm a true believer in anti-wrinkle treatments of any kind anyway, but I still want to use something that feels great on my skin and that seems to be taking good care of it. And when I compared the ingredient list of this one with my previous moisturizer all my doubts were swept away in an instant...

Eye cream: Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Eye Treatment

Face oil: RMS Beauty Oil. This stuff is amazing and I'm currently using it mostly as a night treatment. But if I feel the need for an extra boost or glow, I use it daytime too.

Cleanser: Juice Beauty Green Apple Brightening Gel Cleanser. Perfect for my combination skin to get rid of any excess oil and dirt at night. I don't use a cleanser in the morning - just water.

Note that I’m about to turn 44 this August, and my skin goals have changed considerably the past 10 years since I started to notice the signs of aging. I still have a combination skin type, but I would never have thought of using oil on my face 10 years ago for instance.

Shampoo: Rahua Shampoo. This shampoo has everything I need for my curly, sometimes unruly hair. Makes it super soft and clean. I also love Kérastase Aura Botanica which has an amazing smell and wonderful feel, although only 96% natural (which is still great when comparing to mainstream shampoo).

Conditioner: Rahua Conditioner or Kérastase Aura Botanica Conditioner.

Finishing treatment: Rahua Finishing Treatment. I was a skeptic to natural finishing treatments too, being used to great products from both Redken and Oribe. But after the first time using this I was convinced - it's an amazing product if, like me, you have the need for extra moisture and to tame frizzy hair.

Make Up

Honestly doing the transition to natural make-up is the best thing I've done in a long time. I've found SO many new favorites, that I would never have found had I stuck to my old routine. And all of these (to me) new products are way better and more fun to work with than the products I used before!

Concealer: RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up. This is a concealer that actually works as a foundation too - so clever! Super results when you use it with the brush! It is formulated to reveal and enhance healthier looking skin - not just cover it up, and it almost melts onto your skin. I don't think I will ever try another concealer again!

Powder: RMS Beauty "Un" Powder. I've always used translucent powders as I don't want to cover up my skin. This powder is perfect to me and has only one ingredient - silica.

Cheeks: RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek. This is amazing on my aging skin (I'm 43 now) since it doesn't make it look dry and powdery, but soft and glowy! And the fact that you can use it on both cheeks and lips make it very handy and versatile. You can apply it with your fingers, but I find the brush wonderful to work with especially for the cheeks. My favorite color is "Spell", but I also have "Demure" and you can blend them to create new shades too!

Lips: RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek and Lily Lolo Lipgloss.

Eye pencil: Lily Lolo Natural Eye Pencil Brown. An eye pencil has to be super soft if you ask me. This one is super soft and never smudge + it's super easy to wash off. I love everything about it!

Eyeshadow: Lily Lolo Eyeshadow Palette "Laid Bare". Absolutely amazing results! I don't use eyeshadow often, but when I do it has to be super easy to use and last through a long party. This one does the job and the colors are amazing!

Mascara: RMS Beauty Volumizing Mascara. Best mascara I've ever had! Doesn't smudge at all (well, if I occasionally fall asleep in the day it might!) and washes off super easily.

Nail Color: Little Ondine is an amazing nail color that peels off with just a bit of warm water - no remover needed! Doesn't last much longer that 1-2 days, but very kind to the nails. Kure Bazaar makes amazing nail colors that are 85% natural. They last just as long as mainstream nail colors.

Other: RMS Beauty Mastermixer is an amazing product which not only works as a highlighter with a beautiful sunkissed look. It can also be blended into your other RMS products to create new interesting looks - it's SO fun for playing around!

I hope you enjoyed my list! I'm also curious to know - have you considered transitioning to natural products? Or perhaps you did it a long time ago? And please share in the comments if you have any favorite natural/non-toxic products!
